Petrus van Schendel (1806-1870): Evening View at a Port, c. 1850, Oil on canvas Private Collection, Belgium Petrus van Schendel, an investigator of nocturnes and the effects of moonlight, brilliantly employed the ever changing quality of light to reveal the world of the night. In this nocturnal scene by van Schendel, under the cloudy sky of a night with a bright moon, several sailboats seem to be superimposed on the water. It is the bright moon in the painting, like a 'night sun', that illuminates everything around, and the water seems to be filled with its glow. Van Schendel called his river scenes and seascapes "Maneschijntjes", or 'Moonshine'
