Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem⁣ A Southern Harbour Scene⁣ 1657-59⁣ “During the course of his long and extremely prolific career Berchem, the son of Pieter Claesz, the outstanding still-life painter, painted biblical, allegorical, and mythological themes, views of harbours, winter scenes, nocturnals, battles, and some genre scenes, as well as the Italianate landscapes for which he is so justly famous, but he apparently never tried his hand at still-life painting.⁣ Typical of Berchem’s decorative and exotic harbour scenes, the harbour was imaginatively identified with the port of Genoa by Jean Aliamet, who engraved the picture in the eighteenth century. The picture’s distinguished provenance demonstrates the artist’s appeal to collectors in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; its owners included the duc de Berry and Anatole Demidoff, Prince of San Donato.”⁣ #paintings #painting #artlovers #artists #famousart #artlegends #art #thearts #everythingart #arteverything #artislife #artislife e🎨 #dailyart #fineart #artoftheday #artstagram #artofinstagram #arthistorian #arthistorynerd #arthistory #historyofart #artlove #artpreciatetheday #17thcenturyart #southernharbour
