Ludwig Deutsch (1855-1935): A Nubian Palace Guard, 1892, Oil on Canvas, 132.4 x 83.8cm (52.125x33in), Private collection Ludwig Deutsch is one of the most recognized Orientalist painters of the nineteenth century, acclaimed for his highly detailed, exquisitely rendered images of daily life in Cairo. After studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, Austrian-born Deutsch settled in the thriving art capital of Paris. After 1883 he drew inspiration almost exclusively from his travels to Egypt. Deutsch was thought to have visited Egypt as many as five times between 1883 and 1904. 'Nubian Palace Guard' is a powerful and noble evocation of the Egyptian world. A Nubian sentry stands guard before a palace entrance, his gaze alert yet that of a man at ease with himself, his stance stoic with muscles tensed, yet exuding a relaxed confidence. Powerful in its overall impact, yet painstaking in its detail, the work bears witness to Deutsch's rigorous and highly accomplished technique. Although little is known of the artist's working methods, it is likely that only the use of a magnifying glass would have allowed the artist to achieve the extremely fine level of detail visible in the present work, with every link in the figure's chainmail individually rendered. This highly finished miniaturistic technique itself mirrors the exquisite Islamic craftsmanship of the various accoutrements worn by the guard. The intensely detailed depiction of the guard enhances by his isolated framing produce a psychologically penetrating image. By capturing the slightly quizzical element to his expression, Deutsch conveys the nobility, strength and grace that were the essence of a palace guard. As the light glimmers on his mighfar's chain mail, the Persian brass shield. The glorious combination of the guards majestic posture enhanced by luscious textiles, powerful and glittering armor enveloped by a spectacular architectural background is an evidence of Deutsch's astounding skill.
