Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920): Seated Woman with Child; Maternity, 1919, oil on canvas, 130 x 81 cm (51.18 x 31.89 in.), Lille Métropole Musée d'Art Moderne d'Art Contemporain et d'Art Brut, France . . 'Maternity' by Modigliani is a portrait of a mother and her child, painted on a large vertical format. The red-haired woman, facing to the spectator, occupies the whole height of the canvas. She wears a blue-gray shawl and a black dress. In her lap lies a child, dressed in a white skirt, brown boots and a green cap. The background in shades of brown allows the characters in the foreground to stand out more in the composition. The title does not includes the names of the models that have posed for Modigliani. However, this work depicts without doubt the family of the painter in 1919. The red-haired woman is Jeanne Hébuterne, the partner of Modigliani, and the little girl in Jeanna's lap is Giovanna, their daughter, barely 1 year old, born in Nice on November 29, 1918.
