Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti) (1518 - 1594): Susanna and the Elders, 1555 - 1556, oil on canvas, 147 × 194 cm, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna The Biblical story of Susanna and the elders was only a pretext in the Renaissance period for representing women dressing before a mirror. Tintoretto’s vain Susanna is so preoccupied by her reflection in the mirror that she fails to see the elders peering at her from behind a wall. The light creates Susanna’s form in crystalline clarity against a background evoked with a fresh poetic sense. Two old judges, meanwhile, spy on her. They approach her with indecent proposals and when she declines accuse her of adultery.
