Lowell Birge Harrison (1854-1929): Late Winter Afternoon (detail), 1908, oil on canvas, 55.88 x 81.28 cm (22 x 32 in.), Private collection Lowell Birge Harrison is worth considering when it comes to mixing colors for winter landscapes. His incredible colour usage is immediately noticed. Shadows on snow are richly coloured in blue and gray-violet, and the winter skies that can often seem one-dimensional are subtly prismatic. Harrison pulls in pinks and greens and yellows, but combines his colours so deftly that you really have to spend time looking closely to see all of the undertones. When he sets his colours to high he still makes them look as natural as, well, a glowing sunrise or muted sunset.
