Friedrich von Amerling (1803–1887): The Young Eastern Woman, 1838, oil on canvas, 106.5 x 90.5 x cm, Cleveland Museum of Art, USA Friedrich von Amerling was an Austro-Hungarian portrait painter in the court of Franz Josef between 1835 and 1880. Besides painting formal portraits, Amerling developed a painting category that remained close to portraiture but crossed over to a slightly sentimental type of genre or character painting, mostly depicting single women in coquettish poses. The rich fabrics and glowing light in his 'The Young Eastern Woman' create an exotic atmosphere, and the woman's pose with an open book echoes traditional representations of ancient sibyls or fortune-tellers, revealing a Western fascination with "Oriental" touches.
