This detail of the Annunciation (1434-1436) is only 37 x 32.5 cm (14.5 x 13 inch) and shows what an unbelievably talented artist Jan van Eyck was. Van Eyck was trained as a miniature painter and his works contain so many details that experts are still debating the meaning of many of its elements. It shows the Annunciation by the Archangel Gabriel to Virgin Mary according to Luke 1:26-38. Gabriel announces that Mary will bear the son of God. We can see two inscriptions in this painting. They are upside-down such that God can read them from Heaven. The archangel's inscription reads "Ave Gra Plena," meaning "Hail, full of grace". Mary's inscription reads "Ecce Ancilla DNI," meaning "Behold the handmaiden of the Lord". #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilPaint #JanvanEyck #VanEyck #Washington #NationalGalleryofArt #NGA #Annunciation #Mary #Angel #Archangel #Colorful #Detailed #Wings #Talented
