Whereas Claude Monet dedicated a large part of his life to painting water lilies, Ivan Aivazovksy was dedicated to capturing the sea under all sorts of conditions. The Shipwreck (1873) showcases Aivazovsky's spectacular ability to capture the sea. Just look at the translucent quality of the water and its interplay with the moonlight. In some cases, Aivazovsky made the sea a subject of a larger narrative, but more often the sea itself was his main focus. Waves, foam, calm water, etc. And then particularly, its appearance under different light conditions, like the moonlight, sunrise, mid-day, sunset, storms, etc. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilPaint #OilonCanvas #Sea #Water #moonlight #Shipwreck #Survivors #Rough #Trouble #Marine #Seascape #Russian #RussianArtist #IvanAivazovksy #Aivazovsky
