How romantic! Love's Messenger (1885) is a watercolor by Marie Spartali Stillman (1844-1927) It's a Pre-Raphaelite work full of symbolism. It shows how the bird just delivered a love letter which the young lady holds against her heart. She was busy stitching a blind-folded cupid, which is a reference to both the good and the bad things that Cupid can bring, including passion and desire, but also the pain that Cupid's arrows can inflict. And there are roses and ivy, which give somewhat conflicting messages. Stillman painted this work, which many consider her best, as a simple study (according to her own words). But it definitely has a lot of interesting aspects that make it a very enjoyable one. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #Watercolor #Stillman #MarieSpartaliStillman #FemaleArtist #FemalePainter #PreRaphaelite #PreRaphaelites #Symbolism #Love #Fidelity #Infidelity #Passion #Desire #LoveLetter #LoveMessage #Bird #Delaware #Museum
