The Virgin Mary is scratching her head about what is happening to her... While John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) is best known for his historical and mythological works, The Annunciation (1914) is a wonderful interpretation of this popular Biblical event. Waterhouse paints the visit of the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary in the year that World War I starts. He decided to show this event in a rural setting. Mary is busy with her daily activities, and she gets surprised by the angel. Unlike most other paintings on this topic, Waterhouse shows her with one hand scratching her head and with the other one on her heart. It was common that both hands in The Annunciation would be in symmetrical positions (like folded or raised), expressing one emotion. But the advantage of having the arms in different positions is that you can express a combination of emotions, in this case, surprise and gratitude. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilonCanvas #OilPainting #Waterhouse #Annunciation #VirginMary #Mary #Angel #Archangel #Gabriel #PreRaphaelite #TheAnnunciation #Biblical #Surprise #Gratitude
