Art can sometimes express what cannot be put into words easily. The Virgin of Consolation (1875) by William-Adolphe Bouguereau is such a moving painting. It shows how a mother that has just lost her son has collapsed onto the lap of the Virgin Mary. And as Mary understands the feeling of losing a son, she tries to console the mother by raising her hands up in prayer to God. Traditionally, artworks about Our Lady of Consolation, an early Catholic title of honor for the Virgin Mary, were painted in a somber style befitting the subject. But Bouguereau reinvented this topic by giving this painting a stunning clarity. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #Bouguereau #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #French #VirginMary #Mary #Consolation #OurLadyofConsolation #Mother #Son #Grief #Sad #Sadness #Catholic
