When the Roman mistress demands some entertainment... The Ionian Dance (1895) was painted by Edward Poynter (1836-1919) The young girl in the center wears a translucent gown. She has been exiled from Greece and the Ionian islands. She performs a native Ionian dance for her Roman mistress, who can be seen on the right in the emerald (dark green) dress. She is the one reclining and wearing jewelry. It is a scene from Ancient Rome, where the women are having a good time listing to the music and watching this foreign dance. Interest in these Roman interiors and scenes had surges after more and more patterns, floors, and decorations were found in Pompeii. Poynter, who spend a lot of time in Rome was familiar with some of these excavations, and you can see that back in the architecture (and particularly the marble floor) of this Roman house. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #BritishArt #BritishPainter #BritishArtist #EdwardPoynter #Poynter #Dance #Dancing #Ionian #Greek #Classical Roman #AncientRome #AncientRoman #OilPainting #OilonCanvas
