Somebody is looking at us... The Virgin of the Grapes (1640s) was painted by Pierre Mignard (1612-1695). It shows an adorable boy looking at the viewer, while his mother is offering him some grapes. It is clearly a Madonna scene, with the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus on her lap. However, the look of Jesus is much more human in most earlier Madonna paintings. And the grapes are not only there because a boy may like grapes, but primarily because of its symbology. Grapes symbolize various things, including a reference to the Eucharist, a reference to Jesus' role as the redeemer (salvation), and a reference to the biblical passage on Christ as the true vine and his believers as the branches (John 15: 1-17). But grapes can also refer to fertility, a warning against indulgence, or the wine that is made from it.
