What do you make of this breakfast scene? After Breakfast (1890) was painted by Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861-1919), one of the first successful female Finish artists. Breakfast is over. And the girl seems to take a moment to let her thoughts go, while smoking a cigarette. And then there is another cigarette balancing at the edge of the table in front of the empty seat. And while smoking was quite common for men during that day, it was still less common for women. Is it a little act of "rebellion" before she continues with her tasks for the day? Were the two breakfast partners talking about something important? Is she just taking the time to reflect on her upcoming day? Or just a daily relaxing moment after breakfast? I like to think that it is the latter, but whatever the story here is, it is a painting that draws you in. Something that the artist probably did on purpose to engage us. It makes me look at the details and beautiful incorporation of light. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #Finnish #FinnishArt #FinnishArtist #FinnishPainter #FemaleArtist #FemalePainter #Breakfast #AfterBreakfast #DanielsonGambogi #Gambogi #Relaxing #Reflection #Contemplating #Smoking #Cigarette
