Don't mess with this enchantress! Circe (1889) by Wright Barker (1864-1941) shows the mythological Circe, who was exiled to a deserted island after she had killed her husband. But Circe had some supernatural powers and was able to turn the visitors to her island into animals like foxes, lions, and wolves, which we see in this painting. The animals would be docile and obey her. And this painting provides a reminder on what would happen to them if they decided not to listen to her. The story of Circe was relatively popular in Britain in the second half of the 19th century, and inspired various artists to capture her, including some famous works by John William Waterhouse which I have posted about earlier. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #Myth #Mythology #Circe #Enchantress #Wolves #Lions #Foxes #Dangerous #Danger #Scary #Classical #Neoclassical #Classicism #Neoclassicism #WrightBarker #Barker
