A colorful painting of a sad scene. Les Saltimbanques (1874) was painted by Gustave Doré (1832-1883), a very versatile French artist. Saltimbanques were acrobats and performers, who had a relatively low standing in French society. But as colorful as they look, it is actually a quite tragic scene as the child has been severely injured during a performance. Doré included a lot of details related to these performers, like the playing cards, their colorful outfits, the animals, music instruments, and the bystanders, allowing us to make our own interpretation of the scene. I hope the image is not too disturbing. Just keep in mind that it is probably an artwork of an imaginary scene, as I did not find any evidence that he observed this during his life. Doré mainly created book illustrations and did not make a lot of paintings. But he had a love for these performers whom he captured several times. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #Dore #GustaveDore #Saltimbanques #Performers #StreetPerformers #Acrobats #Injured #Injury #Tragic
