The Sirens strike again! Cave of the Storm Nymphs (1903) by Edward Poynter (1836-1919) shows three Sirens surrounded by treasures, while a large ship in the background is hitting the cliffs. These Sirens lured the bored and eager sailors with their irresistible music and singing to the rocky coast of their island, where the sailors would be captured or drowned in the shipwreck. One of the Sirens here is holding her music instrument, a kind of lyre, while the other two are lazily playing with the coins and jewelry they looted earlier, and patiently wait for the rest of the treasure of the ship in the background to come to shore. There are actually two versions of this painting, one is in the private collection of the British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and the other one is in the Virginia Hermitage Museum in Norfolk. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #EdwardPoynter #Poynter #Myth #Mythology #Nymph #Nymphs #Cave #Storm #Sirens #Sailors #Shipwreck #Treasures
