Do you recognize this impressive piece of architecture? Forecourt of the Umayyad Mosque (1890) by the German-Jewish artist Gustav Bauernfeind (1848–1904) shows a mosque in Damascus, a city in Syria with a richer history than most others in this world. Also known as the Great Mosque of Damascus, it is one of the largest and oldest mosques that still exists. And Bauernfeind, who spent a lot of time in Damascus, was obsessed by the beauty of this building. He was originally trained as an architect, and combined the beautiful architecture (and all its magnificent details) with the colorful flags and people who seem to be part of some festivity. After first discovering this mosque in 1888, Bauernfeind visited it everyday to make sketches. However, he had to bribe the guards of the mosque all the time to be allowed to sketch over there. This painting was sold in 2019 for about five million USD. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #GermanArt #GermanArtist #GermanPainter #Jewish #Damascus #Mosque #Syria #Colorful #GustavBauernfeind #Bauernfeind #GreatMosque #Umayyad #UmayyadMosque
