What was the last time you felt like this? The Tired Dancer (1879) by John Reinhard Weguelin (1849-1927) shows an exhausted Roman dancer sleeping against a marble bench. The dancer wears a translucent red gown, a necklace of turquoise beads, and a garland of yellow flowers. And during her sleep some of the yellow petals have fallen off on her shoulders and gown. Her tambourine can be seen in the foreground, and in the background, we can see some of the guests to the party. The whole scene is adorned with classical statues, columns, and marble reliefs. And the combination of the solid white-ish marble and her gown create a beautiful contrast. The Neoclassical style of this painting strongly reminds of better-known artists like Edward Poynter (1836-1919), Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912), and John William Godward (1861-1922). #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #Dance #Dancer #Tired #Exhausted #Neoclassical #Neoclassicism #Roman #RomanEmpire #Marble #Party
