Late 19th-century fashion. Young Woman Adjusting her Corset (1893) was painted by Pierre Carrier-Belleuse (1851-1932), best known for his pastel paintings of dancers at the opera. This work is also a pastel painting, and you can see how the artist paid careful attention to capturing the woman and her reflection in the middle, while using broader, less precise brush strokes for her surroundings. It focuses on the woman lacing her hourglass corset. These corsets were in fashion during the end of the 19th century, though just like the rest of fashion, the preferred length, colors, and style of the corset changed constantly. The corset had multiple purposes. Besides it being a fashionable item used to wear for a night out, it was also popular to train the shape of the body and to keep a good posture (both for women and men). #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #PastelPainting #PastelonCanvas #Pastel #CarrierBelleuse #Belleuse #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #Corset #Fashion #HourglassCorsett #Fashionable #Preparing #Preparation #FrenchFashion #France #French
