The title may be misleading to some... An Egyptian Pot Seller at Gizeh (1876-1878) is a powerful Oriental painting by Elisabeth Jerichau Baumann (1819-1881). As a female artist, Baumann had a different take on her subjects. If you compare the Orientally-themed paintings from Baumann with those of her male colleagues from that day, you will notice that she empowers them by portraying them with a stronger personality than mainly focusing on their beauty and sensuality. One of the advantages that Baumann had was that she was allowed to enter the harems (unlike her male colleagues), allowing her to portray them more realistically and directly. It explains why she has been able to portray this harem member directly looking at us. And while the title of this painting is quite intriguing, she is not selling any cannabis ;-) If you look at the background of this painting, she is selling actual pots. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FemaleArtist #FemalePainter #PolishArt #DanishArt #GermanArt #GermanArtist #PolishArtist #DanishArtist #Oriental #Orientalism #Egyptian #Pot #PotSeller #Gizeh
