A unique depiction of the Virgin Mary. The Annunciation (1892) by Arthur Hacker (1858-1919) shows how an angel approaches the Virgin Mary from behind to tell her that she will be pregnant. It is based on the Gospel of James, which tells the story of Mary's life, and its account differs from how Mary heard the news in the better-known gospels (where she would see the angel approaching her). And this is not the only difference with most other paintings of The Annunciation. Hacker portrays Mary in an Islamic dress, something he had seen during his travels through Morocco and Spain. The image shown here only shows the top half of this painting, but you can click on My Stories today to see the full painting, where we can see Mary standing at a well as described in the Gospel of James. And if you are not familiar with this gospel, it's pretty easy to read and you can find the full text online in several places. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #ArthurHacker #Hacker #Annunciation #Mary #VirginMary #Archangel #Angel #Christian #Islamic #Religious #Tate #TateBritain #London #GospelofJames
