Seeing how the love of your life falls in love with himself. Narcissus and Echo (1895) by Solomon Joseph Solomon (1860-1927) shows one of the most intriguing but tragic mythological stories. The story of these two mythological characters is described in Ovid's narrative poem called Metamorphoses. It combines the stories of the mountain nymph Echo and the beautiful hunter Narcissus. The story starts with the Greek gods Zeus and Hera. Zeus loved to hang out with the beautiful nymphs, and Hera was on a mission to catch him. She met with the beautiful nymph Echo, who was instructed by Zeus not to tell anything incriminating. Hera did not like that and cursed her, such that she could only speak the last words spoken to her. One day, Echo saw the beautiful Narcissus out hunting, and immediately fell in love with him, as you can see in the painting. But the problem was that she could not express her love for him due to Hera's curse. Being together with Narcisses near the water, she could only see how Narcissus rejected her and fell in love with his own reflection. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #Solomon #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #Myth #Mythology #Narcissus #Echo #GreekMythology #Reflection #Love #SelfLove #Curse #Hera #Zeus #Tragic #Tragedy
