Love can both be a source of happiness and pain. Hope Comforting Love in Bondage (1901) by Sidney Meteyard (1868-1947), who painted in the late Pre-Raphaelite style. On the right side is Hope, who is fully dressed and appears as a respectable matron. She comforts the man representing love. He is only dressed in cloth bindings and a wreath of roses on his head. On the bottom left are the bow and arrows from love. And it is hard to miss his enormous wings, which are held together / restricted by rose briars. You can see the thorns on the branches. The combination of the roses and their thorns symbolize the pleasures and pains that love can bring. And even if love is a source of pain for us, there is always hope that can comfort us and soften that pain. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #Meteyard #PreRaphaelite #PreRaphaelites #Hope #Love #Bondage #Pain #Happiness #Symbolic #Roses #Comforting #Comfort #Birmingham #Museum
