She looks so sad. The Girl at the Gate (1889) by George Clausen (1852-1944) shows a kind of chain reaction. The old man in the back looks at the old woman, who, in turn, looks concerned at the girl in the foreground. Did she receive some sad news? Or is she depressed about something? She doesn't look happy, and it seems that the old woman in the back is aware that something is going on. Clausen painted this work in the village of Cookham Dean in Berkshire, where he lived. He had asked the 16-year old nanny for his family to model as the girl in the foreground. He captured her in a naturalistic rural setting, truthfully capturing the elements he observed in his village, include the wooden cottage, the farmers in the background that lived a few houses down the street, and the hens and wildflowers. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #BritishArt #BritishPainter #BritishArtist #Rural #RuralSetting #Clausen #GeorgeClausen #Gate #Farm #Sad #Sadness #Depressed #Naturalistic #Realistic #Realist #Naturalist st
