How old do you think this princess is? Victoria, Princess Royal was painted in 1851 by William Corden the Younger (1819-1900). It shows Princess Victoria (1840-1901), the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria. This means that she was still 10 (almost 11) years old when this portrait of her was painted. It is not the original portrait though, it is a copy of an original by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873) who painted many European royalties and portrayed Queen Victoria multiple times. The copy of this portrait was made as a birthday present for Princess Victoria's grandmother, the Duchess of Kent. The girl portrayed here is known as Victoria, Princess Royal, an honorary term that is sometimes given to the eldest daughter of the monarch. Currently, Anne (the oldest daughter of Queen Elizabeth II) is the Princess Royal. Victoria, Princess Royal met her future husband for the first time around the time this portrait was made. When she was 11 years old, she would meet the 10-year older Prince Frederick William of Prussia for the first time. Four years later they became engaged, and they married when she was 17. She would later become the German Empress for a few months. Finally, thousands of letters between Queen Victoria and her daughter Victoria, Princess Royal have survived providing a very interesting view of royal life in the 19th century. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #CordentheYounger #Corden #Winterhalter #Copy #Replica #Present #Queen #Princess #PrincessVictoria #VictoriaPrincessRoyal #PrincessRoyal #Portrait #RoyalPortrait #Portraiture #GermanEmpress #Empress #BritishRoyalty #RoyalFamily
