Exploring new territories. A World (1899) was painted by the Austrian artist Maximilian Lenz (1860-1948), one of the founders of the Vienna Secession (one of the first Modernist art movements). The German title for this painting was Eine Welt, which can also be translated as A Day Dream, and this seems a more appropriate title for this spiritual scene. It shows a man walking through a pasture, surrounded by three groups of women dressed in blue. The man looks contemplative, strolling through the landscape, looking down, with a cigar in his hand. Dressed in a suit, he seems out of place. And he seems unaware of the four ladies approaching him. It is if he is exploring new territories. Just as noticeable as composition are the intense colors that Lenz used, something that was a trademark of the artists belonging to the Vienna Secession (which included Gustav Klimt). The blue, green, white, and red somehow form a harmonious combination, making this work stand out from more conventional works. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #AustrianArt #AustrianPainter #AustrianArtist #EuropeanArt #MaximilianLenz #Lenz #ViennaSecession #World #TheWorld #Daydream #Reverie #Colorful #Intense #Dreamy #Dreamlike
