A different type of Madonna painting. Montenegrin Madonna (1865) was painted by the Czech artist Jaroslav Čermák (1830-1878), best known for his historical paintings. This Madonna shows the Virgin Mary differently than most of us are used to. Like many other artists before him, he modeled Mary after some of the local people he came across, resulting in a pretty unique result. We can see how Mary puts the peacefully-sleeping baby Jesus in his cradle. And the relative simplicity of the scene, combined with the Montenegrin model result in a very different feel than the more famous Madonna paintings by people like Raphael and the people he inspired. Čermák had a special love for Montenegro which he visited frequently and he captured part of its history in his other works. But he also created works about everyday life in Montenegro. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #Montenegro #Montenegrin #CzechArt #CzechArtist #CzechPainter #Cermak #JaroslavCermak #Madonna #VirginMary #Mary #Jesus #BabyJesus #Sleeping #Cradle
