I smell trouble. The Temptation of Eve (1910) by Pierre Jean van der Ouderaa (1841-1915) shows an interesting variation of the Fall of Man. It shows the story in the Garden of Eden as described in the Book of Genesis. We can see Eve with a bouquet of flowers, surrounded by so many other beautiful, colorful flowers. And we can recognize a variety of animals in the background, all harmoniously living together. Live was as good as it gets. God has told Adam and Eve that they could eat everything, except the fruit from the tree of knowledge. In the biblical story a serpent tempted Eve into eating a fruit from this tree anyway, and this is the scene that has been often depicted. But Van der Ouderaa decided to replace the serpent by a demonic figure. He approaches Eve with a smile and an apple in his hand, trying to convince her to try it out.
