A masterclass by a famous surgeon. Theodor Billroth Operating (1890) by Adalbert Seligmann (1862-1945) shows a public surgery. The bearded man in yellow is the 61-year old German surgeon Theodor Billroth (1829-1894) operating in the auditorium of Vienna General Hospital, surrounded by other doctors in white coats. And the audience, filled with more doctors, medical students, and other interested observers are all dressed up for the occasion. Theodor Billroth was a successful surgeon, and he is regarded as the founding father of modern abdominal surgery. In addition, he was a good musician and a close friend and famous composer Johannes Brahms. Public surgeries were already a theme during the 17th-century, when Baroque painters like Rembrandt painted publicly accessible anatomy lessons. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #AdalbertSeligmann #Seligmann #AustrianArt #AustrianArtist #AustrianPainter #Surgery #PublicSurgery #Lesson #AnatomyLesson #TheodorBillroth #Billroth
