Mosaic Icon of Christ the Merciful⁣ 1100-1150⁣ “Christ is represented as a figure in the type of the Pantocrator (ruler of all). He is dressed in the usual robes (chiton and cloak) and holds a closed Gospel book in his left arm, the cover of which is decorated with precious stones and pearls. The right one, peeking out of the cloak loop, performs the gesture of blessing with the ring and middle finger folded in. On both sides of the large nimbus of the cross, which surrounds the elongated, rather a little tired and indifferent face, the abbreviations for Jesus Christ are attached, but the epithet "the merciful" has been added. The incarnate of the face, the robes and the cross nimbus are modeled with great mastery from differently structured mosaic parts. The size of the icon suggests that it originally occupied an excellent place in the templon (picture wall) of a church. Among the few surviving large-format mosaic icons, it is one of the oldest and best-preserved.”⁣ (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin)⁣ #paintings #painting #artlovers #famousartists #famousart #artlegends #masterpieceart #artmasterpieces #thearts #everythingart #arteverything #artislife #artislife e🎨 #dailyart #fineart #arthistorian #arthistorynerd #arthistory #historyofart #artlover #mosaicicon #christthemerciful #12thcenturyart #byzantineart #mosaicart
