What is the first word that comes to mind when looking at this painting? October (1878) was painted by the French artist Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884). It shows a bleak image of the potato harvest in a town northeast of Paris. The bare landscape and the cloudy sky set the mood. It shows the hard work that peasants had to do to get enough food on the table. But if you look at the faces of these two women, you don’t see that hardship. There is a certain dignity and sense of purpose in what they are doing. They are picking up the leftover potatoes to feed their families for the weeks to come, a reality for many people during that day. Bastien-Lepage painted this kind of theme more often. He was unhappy with the many paintings his colleagues created during that time showing the idyllic life in the city and countryside. Instead, Bastien-Lepage wanted to show the reality of life, which he did in a brilliant way here. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #FrenchArt #FrenchPainter #FrenchArtist #BastienLepage #Lepage #October #Harvest #Potatoes
