Have you ever had someone paint your own portrait or that of your children? Princess Helena (1846-1923) & Princess Louise (1848-1939) was painted in 1857 by the British artist James Sant (1820-1916). This portrait of two princesses of 9 and 11 years old is surrounded by a wreath of lilies. The lilies traditionally symbolize purity and were often used in paintings of the Virgin Mary. It is a tender and adorable portrait of two sisters dressed alike. They are two of the children of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) and Prince Albert (1819-1861). They had nine children together and Victoria was their fifth child and Louise was their sixth child. And this portrait was a birthday present from Prince Albert for his wife. It was customary for British royalties to have several portraits painted of themselves throughout their life, and that tradition is still alive today. You can find, for example, several portraits of the current Queen Elizabeth II, ranging from her youth until quite recently. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #BritishArt #BritishArtist #BritishPainter #JamesSant #Sant #Portrait #DoublePortrait #Princesses #Princess #Tender #Adorable
