Do you like Norse mythology? Thor Battering the Midgard Serpent (1790) was painted by the Swiss artist Henry Fuseli (1741-1825). It is the first of three artworks by Fuseli that I will post today. It shows the muscular body of the Norse/Germanic god Thor, who is associated with lightning, thunderstorms, fertility, and the protection of mankind. We can see him here battling the Midgard Serpent, a serpent so big that he could wrap himself all around the earth and hold his own tail. He was also the archenemy of Thor. And this scene shows a moment during a fishing trip of Thor, together with the giant Hymir. He had put his bait out, and unintentionally caught his archenemy Jörmungandr (the Midnight Serpent). #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #HenryFuseli #Fuseli #SwissArt #SwissArtist #SwissPainter #Thor #NorseMythology #GermanicMythology #Myth #J örmungandr #Hymir #Fishing
