This trip was not for the faint-hearted… HMS 'Erebus' Passing Through the Chain of Bergs (1842) was painted by the British artist Richard Brydges Beechey (1808-1895). It shows a dramatic scene from the Antarctic expedition of 1839-1843 by Rear-Admiral Sir James Clark Ross. You can the two ships that were under his command, and Beechey captured the sublime Antartic landscape in the dark. You can feel how dangerous such a trip was. One mistake and the trip ends in a disaster. The expedition resulted in various discoveries, including the area that is now known as the Ross Ice Barrier. The HMS 'Erebus' survived the trip, and in 1848, it was abandoned on a next mission. The sunken ship was discovered seven years ago, in 2014. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #Beechey #BritishArt #BritishPainter #BritishArtist #Antarctic #Expedition #Icebergs #Erebus #Dangerous #Ice
