Do you recognize the medium used for this painting? Harpist Seated with a Fan was painted around 1886 by the French artist Paul-César Helleu (1859-1927). It is an intriguing kind of work, in which the woman in the foreground is not really in focus. Helleu did this on purpose. You can see this as a still-life, in which he also included a person. The attributes surrounding the woman are of equal importance to the woman herself (and that is why we also don’t know the identity of the woman). And it is not only a still life, but also a composition of colors. And to answer my initial question, it is painted with pastel, which creates quite a different effect than oil or watercolor. It seems that the painting remains very fresh and the colors different than we are used to in many other paintings. Of course, the different medium and composition of this painting do not mean that we should all like it. But I am curious to hear what you think of it? One person who liked it though was the famous American artist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), one of the many international friends of Helleu. Sargent owned this work from until his death. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #Pastel #PastelPainting #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #Helleu #PaulCesarHelleu #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #Sargent #StillLife
