Oh, Cleopatra! The Death of Cleopatra (1875) was painted by the Austrian artist Hans Makart (1840-1884). It shows the Cleopatra just moments after she is lethally bit by a serpent. According to a popular version of history, it was her way to commit suicide at age 39. The painting provides some intriguing contrasts. On the one hand a sad moment is depicted in muted colors. But on the other hand, the artist shows the luxurious clothes and accessories of Cleopatra, combined with an erotic vibe. It leaves me with a mixed feeling, not sure whether I like the work or not? And while the snake bite theory of Cleopatra’s death is quite popular, scholars continue to debate what the reason of her death was, including theories that she poisoned herself or that she was murdered. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #AustrianArt #AustrianArtist #AustrianPainter #HansMakart #Makart #Cleopatra #Drama #Dramatic
