A little humor to start the day. The Unexpected Surprise was painted by the French artist Paul-Charles Chocarne-Moreau (1855-1931). It is a typical work for Moreau, who primarily painted genre paintings containing young boys in humorous situations. The boys in his paintings are usually getting in some trouble or are doing naughty things, like stealing a piece of bread, hurting themselves, playing with animals, or playing on each other. The American artist Norman Rockwell (1894-1978) would later follow in the footsteps of Chocarne-Moreau and become immensely popular with his comical and anecdotal depictions of boys and girls. However, it is not clear to me if Rockwell was familiar with the works of Chocarne-Moreau. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #Moreau #Humor #Fun #Funny #Rockwell #ChocarneMoreau
