A painter with a unique mind. The Skeleton Painter (1896) was created by the Belgian artist James Ensor (1860-1949). Ensor was one of the most original artists in the late 19th century. He liked to include masked people and skeletons in his paintings, forming a morbid commentary on the human condition and its mortality. Among his skeleton works is a self-portrait as a skeleton. This particular work shows an artist in his studio, surrounded by his many artworks, and several skulls. The bright colors create a cheerful scene at first sight, but the skeletons create an interesting contrast. It is no wonder that his works always stand out from the crowd when they are exhibited.
