Which one is your favorite? The Birth of Venus has been a popular topic among artists over time, not only because it depicts an intriguing mythological story, but it was a valid justification to paint nudity. The first (and brighter) painting is Birth of Venus (1877) by Fritz Zuber-Buhler. The second one is The Birth of Venus (1879) by William-Adolphe Bouguereau. When showing the first painting in My Stories last week, several of you reacted by saying that it was very similar to the one by Bouguereau, or “just a copy of Bouguereau’s work. Interestingly, Zuber-Buhler painted his version two years before Bouguereau. An interesting element about Zuber-Buhler’s version is that he used the same models multiple times in his painting. The reason was probably that it was expensive to hire nude models and reusing the same model in multiple poses was an economical decision, which (in my opinion) does not really have a negative effect on the painting. But I am curious to hear your thoughts on this! #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #Bouguereau #ZuberBuhler #Venus #BirthofVenus #Birth #Myth #Mythology #Goddess
