Can you guess what is going on in this painting? Morgan-le-Fay (1864) was painted by the British Artist Frederick Sandys (1829-1904). This woman, sorceress, goddess, witch, or fairy is a bit of a complicated figure in the Arthurian legends, mainly because she has been put in so many different roles and her roles changed over time. Morgan le Fay was originally a benevolent enchantress who helped to protect King Arthur. Her role was not discussed in great detail, but as time went on, the Arthurian legends were expanded and her role and intentions started to change. One thing that we can conclude from the variety of stories about her is that she is quite unpredictable and that she can use her magic for good and evil causes. And so, this painting in Pre-Raphaelite style reflects this ambiguity quite well with all the bright colors and the many intriguing items across the painting. But if we combine what we see in this painting with what we know about Morgan-le-Fay, the best interpretation is that she has just completed a magic robe on the loom behind her. And she is using a dragon-like device with fire to add the spell, which would help her to put the body of King Arthur on fire, thus showing more her evil side. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #Sandys #FrederickSandys #PreRaphaelite #MorganleFay #LeFay #Morgan #Enchantress #Sorceress #Magic #KingArthur #Intriguing
