The special effects of pastel. These portraits were created by the French artist Lucien Victor Guirand de Scévola (1871-1950). As you can see, using pastel can give an artwork a very different vibe than using oil paint or watercolor. The portraits here have some mysterious and timeless qualities. And it is interesting to look at the patterns throughout these works. Some of them contain a beautiful rhythm, reminding me of some of the self-portraits by Vincent van Gogh. These portraits are of people of the upper class, and we can see their sparkling jewelry which contrast nicely with the rest of their outfits. Later in his career, during WWI, Guirand de Scévola would be one of the inventors of military camouflage. Together with some colleagues, he would paint the colors and patterns that we still associate with camouflage today in Cubist style. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #Pastel #Pastellist #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #Guirand #Scevola #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #Camouflage #Portrait #PortraitPainting
