Fantasy or reality? Sarah Bernhardt At Paris Opera was painted by the French artist René Lelong (1871–1933). It shows the famous French stage actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) receiving the attention from some older gentlemen. She was the most sought-after actress during a good part of her career, and she played both female and male roles. Among the plays that she performed in are La Dame Aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas, Ruy Blas by Victor Hugo, and Hamlet by Shakespeare (in which she played a male role). She was both a great actress and singer, making her perfect for many roles. Later in her life, she would also perform in some of the early motion pictures. Lelong captured her here in a beautiful outfit at the Paris Opera building, where she no doubt was the center of the attention. With his muted palette, Lelong created a painting that could be interpreted as a realistic painting with a limited number of colors, or a fantasy painting taking place in another world. #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #ReneLelong #Lelong #FrenchArt #FrenchArtist #FrenchPainter #SarahBernhardt #Bernhardt #ParisOpera #Actress
