Would you be able to resist her? Circe the Temptress was painted by the Belgian artist Charles Hermans (1839–1924). Circe was a beautiful sorceress described in Homer’s Odyssey. When Odysseus returned from the Trojan War, he and his crew past the island where Circe lived. Circe invited them to her island, but quickly turned the crew of Odysseus into pigs. Odysseus, however, outsmarted her, and he was able to withstand the potion she gave him and reverse the spell she put on his crew. Hermans here created a modern version of Circe, alluding to the fact that people like Circe could still be found in his society. And instead of turning men into pigs, this version of Circe shows that she got the man in the background so drunk that he slumped at the table. On to her next victim… #Art #Painting #Artwork #ArtHistory #HistoryofArt #OilPainting #OilonCanvas #FineArts #ArtoftheDay #Circe #Myth #Mythology #Sorceress #Temptress #FemmeFatale #Hermans #BelgianArt #BelgianArtist #BelgianPainter
